It’s one of those existential majiggers (although he denied he was such a sort, prefer to be labelled under the absurdity bracket) – you really couldn’t escape it in the 20th century, the philosophy was all over the place. Albert Camus (1913 to 1960-French Algeria) won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1947 largely for this work and his prior novel The Stranger. (There is some background information on Camus in my post on The Stranger. The Plague is considered an existentialist classic, despite Camus' objection to the label. The narrative tone is similar to Kafka's, especially in The Trial, whose individual sentences potentially have multiple meanings, the material often pointedly resonating as stark allegory of phenomenal consciousness, and the human condition.
